Fans from Miranda's Choice

Fans - elegant Accessories for a little Cooling Effect

A fan is not only used for cooling. It is said that ladies in earlier times developed a secret language, playing with the fan became non-verbal communication with the opposite sex. Even today, we like to use the fan as an accessory. Especially on hot summer days, we are grateful for a little cool breeze and protect our painstakingly applied make-up from melting.

In Europe, the hand fan was a fashionable ornament, a status symbol and a means of coquetry. The typical Spanish fan has long been considered an accessory for elegant women, not least to provide refreshment on hot summer days. It has also become a stylistic device for certain dances, such as flamenco. In Japan, it is a prop in traditional dances that increases the expressiveness of the gestures by extending the arm.

The flatness of most types of fan invited decorative design. The sticks were carved, openworked or gilded, the leaves of folding fans were elaborately painted. This elaborate and expensive production made it a status symbol for a long time. This changed in the 18th century with the spread of printed hand fans at affordable prices. Mechanical fan production made it possible to meet the steadily increasing demand for fans, and in the 19th century the most fan variations in the history of the hand fan were produced.
