In 469, the commemoration day of St. Valentine was introduced into the Church. Widespread special services were held in which married couples were blessed. Then in the 14th century the feast became associated as a celebration of romantic love. 4 centuries later, lovers already used the day to give each other small gifts such as flowers or sweets, often accompanied by a personal message.
